Frequently Asked Questions

What sets ClearPoint apart from other credit counseling agencies?

ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions has a long track record (40+ year) of assisting consumers in improving their personal finances through counseling and educational workshops.  We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Our services are completely confidential.

Our credit and housing counselors are available to speak with our clients by phone and/or in-person at one of our branch locations. Credit counseling is also available by Internet.

ClearPoint is:

I’m in financial distress. How can ClearPoint help me?

Our credit counselors, housing counselors and bankruptcy educators meet with clients individually or in groups to offer personalized advice on steps you can take to improve your situation–step-by-step–be it create a budget, prioritize bill payments, strategize to pay down debt, learn your alternatives to foreclosure, understand how bankruptcy will affect your credit report, and more.

Many of our clients are so overwhelmed by their financial situations that they don’t know their options or next steps. It’s not unusual for our credit counseling clients to bring a bag of unopened credit card statements to their appointments. It’s helpful to have an experienced financial expert help clients take stock of their situations and guide them on how to proceed. Other clients know exactly what they need from their counseling sessions–a reverse mortgage counseling certificate, a bankruptcy education certificate or advice on how to buy their first home, for instance.

In cases of very high credit card debt, our counselors may introduce the prospect of a debt management program (or plan, also known as DMPs).

How we may help you is highly dependent on your particular financial situation.

What are your services?

What are the prices for your services?

Many of our services are offered for free–others at a low cost. For a complete breakdown, see ClearPoint’s fee schedule.

How is ClearPoint funded?

We receive funding from multiple sources–mostly grants, voluntary contributions from creditors who participate in our debt management plans and client fees.

Some financial support comes from voluntary contributions from creditors who participate in DMPs. Creditors have a financial interest in getting paid, so most are willing to make a contribution to help fund our agency. These contributions are usually calculated as a percentage of payments made through the DMP.  However, clients’ creditors are always credited with 100% of the amount paid through us. ClearPoint works with all creditors, regardless of whether or not they contribute to our agency.
