Clearpoint and CredAbility Complete Merger

Combination Creates Second Largest NFCC Agency in U.S.

ATLANTA, GA – December 31, 2013 – Clearpoint Credit Counseling Solutions and CredAbility today completed their merger, forming the nation’s second largest nonprofit credit counseling organization among agencies accredited by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. The combined organization will have 51 offices in 16 states from California to New York. During the past five years, the two agencies counseled nearly two million households in financial distress and helped them repay more than $1 billion in credit card debt.

The combined organization will be called Clearpoint Credit Counseling Solutions and its headquarters will be in Atlanta. Chris Honenberger will be the chief executive officer. The board of directors will consist of 30 directors, 15 from each organization.

The combined organization will be known as Clearpoint. Consumers seeking help can find a counselor online at both www.clearpoint.org and www.credability.org. The main toll-free telephone numbers to reach a counselor are 877.877.1995 and 800.251.2227. Beginning today, billboards announcing the name change will appear in several cities where CredAbility has offices, including Atlanta, Orlando, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Knoxville, Tenn., Jackson, Miss., and Greenville, S.C.

“This merger brings together two of the oldest and most trusted brands in the nonprofit credit counseling sector and enables us to offer a full array of counseling and education services to consumers nationwide,” said Honenberger. “It will also help us serve consumers more efficiently, which frees up capital to invest in new and improved client services.”

The new Clearpoint has a long history in many communities across the country when it was known as Consumer Credit Counseling Service. CredAbility was founded in Atlanta in 1964 and Clearpoint’s origins date back to1971. To commemorate a half-century of service as a nonprofit credit counseling organization, the organization will celebrate its 50-year anniversary in 2014.

By combining the strengths of each agency, the new organization will provide a broader range of services to consumers nationwide. Clearpoint is one of the leading agencies that helps people repay their credit card debt through the establishment of debt management plans. CredAbility is one of the nation’s largest housing and bankruptcy counseling agencies. Both are also recognized leaders in financial education and literacy.

The new Clearpoint will have more than 150 credit, housing and bankruptcy counselors and financial educators. Its counselors will be available 24/7 by Internet and six days a week via telephone. It will also have one of the largest staffs of Spanish-speaking counselors and financial educators in the nation.
