Saving Every Day - Spending Free Time Wisely
Remember when free time was really free? When you work hard, it's important to take a well-deserved break without breaking the bank. It's true: The simplest pleasure can bring the greatest joy. So keep it simple, and try some inexpensive-and even free-ways to make your time off more rewarding:
- Attend high school sporting events instead of
college or pro games.
- Attend movies during matinee hours versus prime
hours for lower ticket prices.
- Socialize with friends at home by hosting
potluck suppers and game nights.
- Join a book club at the library or bookstore or
organize one with your friends.
- Check out DVDs from the library and make
popcorn at home for an inexpensive "night at the movies."
- Visit state and public parks and take a nature
walk or hike.
- Use public picnic areas or sit in a city park
to enjoy a good book.
- Take advantage of free outdoor concerts in the
summer and free ice-skating in the winter at your city park.
- Volunteer at live events such as theater,
ballet, opera, and concerts. It's a great way to see a performance for
free.
- Meet new people by becoming active in community
groups such as choirs, civic clubs, activity clubs and charities.
- Instead of paying for a gym membership, workout
at home; jog around your neighborhood; ride a bike; or play tennis at a
local school or park.
- Visit the library and find a cozy cubicle to
read your favorite weekly or monthly magazines instead of buying them at
the grocery store. Let your child hunt for books or attend a story hour
if you can't go alone.
- Slowing down can be the greatest luxury of all. If you can't afford to go away on vacation, relax at home with no agenda. Sleep in. Soak in a bubble bath. Write a letter or send an e-mail to a long-lost friend. Start a garden or try out a new recipe. Use your free time to explore your community; take a historic walking tour; or attend a free lecture at the local library or museum. Pamper yourself by simply enjoying your time away from work.
Taking time out for yourself is one of the most important things you can do to relieve stress. When it comes to relaxing, don't always look for something or someone else to entertain you. Use your imagination; you'll not only save money, you'll find satisfaction in relying on your own creativity and resourcefulness.
