Bob V. - Arlington, VA
Now debt-free, former ClearPoint client Bob V. is a Human Resources professional in
Arlington, Virginia. When Bob decided to take action to turn his financial life around, he
was recently divorced and at the bottom of a very deep hole of debt. Well-educated, with
a Master's Degree, he never expected to find himself in tens of thousands of dollars in
debt and that horrifying feeling of being 'out of control.' This is his story.
"I was drowning with more debt than I could handle. It was bad enough acknowledging
a failed marriage, but I also had no idea how I'd handle all of 'our' debt alone. I was devastated and
frustrated because I wanted to set the record straight and clean up my accounts. The debts were more
than I could handle, and I didn't know how I'd be able to pay off everything on my own."
"My experience was life-saving. Jennifer was my ClearPoint counselor and really helped save
me from the very start. She reduced my interest rates and monthly payments right away. She taught me
what to look out for when dealing with creditors. The fees and penalties they can add on top of the usual
charges are really amazing and scary. I started to see the results of the debt resolution plan she put into
place in just one month. I felt as though someone actually cared about me and my future. What a relief. I
just recently finished repaying my debts and I have a hard time picturing where I'd be now if it weren't for
ClearPoint."
"ClearPoint made it all positive. It was tough medicine, but it worked.Throughout the program,
there was never anything that made me think that working with ClearPoint would be anything less than a
positive experience. They delivered on their promises. There aren't too many companies that do that."
Wanting to help others in similar situations, Bob offers these tips:
-
"Don't be fooled by tempting credit card offers
in the mail or on the Internet. Take pleasure in tearing up the offers
and run away!"
-
"If you feel you're in over your head, seek
help sooner rather than later from a trusted credit counseling
organization. Mark sure their interest is in helping people learn how to
manage their own financial lives. Check to see that they have an
'education' mission and not a profit motive! Check them out with the
Better Business Bureau or the National Foundation for Credit
Counseling."
-
"Don't be shy and don't drown in useless
feelings of guilt. It's over; get on with paying the Piper. We all have
our sob stories, but help is not far away. The financial specialists
really know how to take control of the situation and get you on a good
track."
-
"Plan your spending and purchases carefully. Again, don't fall into the trap of thinking you'll
somehow 'make it up' next month. It won't happen. The hole only gets deeper."
