Our Credit Counselors Share Budget Cuts You Never Thought Of

By Sherry Tetreault

Do you constantly find yourself using credit cards and loans to cover your day-to-day expenses? Do you have savings you can use for emergencies and periodic expenditures? Do you wonder why you never seem to have enough money? While prices are rising and many of the costs of living are beyond your control, you still may have choices and flexibility in other areas.

An NFCC-certified counselor at ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions can help you see your situation from a different angle. As a non-profit consumer credit counseling service, ClearPoint offers consumers a wide variety of services including budget, credit, housing and bankruptcy counseling. We can help you develop an action plan that will help you reach your future financial goals. Your action plan might include some of the following tips and questions you need to ask yourself in order to make effective changes to your budget.

Consider a trip to the grocery store. Do you make a list? Have you prepared a menu for the following week's meals? What activities or outings does your family have planned for that week? Do you clip coupons? Coupons are a way for merchants to get you to try their products, and in most cases, they can offer savings. When you plan your shopping trip, go at a time of day when the store isn't busy. You will then be able to get in and out quickly, and reduce the temptation to purchase those little extras that can add up. Planning will also help cut down the number of times you need to shop, saving on gas.

What about insurance? Most states now require automobile insurance. If you are a homeowner with a mortgage lien, the mortgage company requires homeowner's insurance. There is also life insurance to consider. Most insurance agencies offer major reductions to your monthly premiums and on deductibles when you have multiply policies with their company. Do your homework.

Think about your costs at home. Setting your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter months and a few degrees higher in the summer months can help reduce monthly bills. Contact your utility company to find out if they offer a budget billing plan. This allows you to plan ahead because the dollar amount remains the same each month. They also know your climate and can offer tips on weatherizing your home to reduce energy leaks, saving you money.

Some employers offer flexible spending plans for medical or daycare expenses. When you enroll in these plans, you allow a set amount to be deducted from your paycheck, prior to taxation. This is tax-free money you can then use for medical or daycare expenses. As you incur expenses, you submit a claim for reimbursement. It is important to note that if you enroll in a medical flexible spending plan, you will need to carefully calculate your estimated total out-of-pocket medical costs for the coming year. The same thing will apply if you enroll in a daycare flexible spending plan. If you over estimate the amount to be deducted from your paycheck and don't incur enough expenses, you lose what you don't spend. If you pay medical and daycare costs these plans allow you to use tax-free money.

A little planning with your household budget goes a long way. Remember, the sooner you start making changes to your spending, the sooner your economic situation will improve. If you feel overwhelmed, don't be afraid to seek help from a trained professional at ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions. The more financial knowledge you have, the more control you have over your financial future.
